This 492-acre tract of land was acquired in late 1977 with 1974 park bond funds from Horizons Residential Care Center. The County is leasing a small part of the acreage to Horizons Residential Care for children. Historically this site was a working farm and school for black children. Remnants of the farming operation still remain at the park in the form of the two large barns.
In the late 1970's, the park opened to the public with hiking trails, a picnic shelter, etc. Development continued with a maintenance building, expanding parking lots, miles of mountain bike trails and most recently the off leash dog area (2 acres) that opened July, 2007 with donated funds.
Horizons Park is a wonderful place for its citizens. A unique history and astounding beauty make it unlike any other park in our county.
